About the workIn Leiko Ikemura's works, it is often difficult to distinguish between lightness and menace. This scene also depicts something mysterious: As if lost in a dream, a girlish character shows her pubic area; next to her lies a severed head. The figures appear relaxed and the merging colours give the moment an unusual softness. The artist, who lives in Berlin, repeatedly addresses the connection between opposites. This idea plays a particularly important role in the religious tradition of her Japanese homeland.
