Footpath with a Bridge across a Stream near a Clump of Trees, ca. 1803
Etching
Panel dimensions9,1 × 14,9 cm
Sheet dimensions10,1 × 16,2 cm
About the workAt first glance, this small etching seems unremarkable. Unlike in traditional landscape depictions, Friedrich does not offer a view of a river stretching into the distance. The group of trees in the center and the bridge running parallel to the edge of the picture block the view into the depth of the landscape. A small cross in the center of the bridge is meant to remind us not to lose ourselves further in the contemplation of the image, but rather to move from simply viewing what is depicted to engaging in a religious practice.
