About the workPaper pages from handwritten account and pattern books were often reused in Japan to wrap kimonos or as templates for items of clothing, for example. This shirt was glued together from the old pages of a ledger. Such designs served as templates for the creation of Western-style shirts. From the end of the nineteenth century onwards, Japanese society – following a decree by the emperor – pressed ahead with its cultural opening to the West. As a result, Japanese clothing styles changed significantly.
