About the workHenrik Nordenberg, who came from Sweden to study in Düsseldorf and stayed there, often depicted women reading or working in front of a window. The motif was already prevalent in seventeenth-century Dutch painting, which was popular in the nineteenth century. Windows enabled the artist to show the effects of backlighting on various materials. Nordenberg emphasised the shadows on the floorboards and the light reflecting on the ceiling. The painting is a study for a larger picture and came from the estate of his friend, the painter Olof Jernberg, whose daughter Marie-Jeanne is portrayed here.
