Fotografie und Gemeinschaft About the workFan clubs, sports clubs, colleagues, or interest group: in Neal Slavin’s portraits, we encounter communities in a wide variety of forms. Motivated by a social-scientific interest, the artist invited groups in the 1970s to develop an image together. The members chose the location, brought props, and decided on their own poses. This resulted in a portrait that makes the community’s self-conception visible. Slavin’s fascination with groups was inspired by a 19th-century philosopher named Alexis de Tocqueville. He observed, in the then still-young democracy of the United States, a strong tendency among citizens to form associations and saw this as an expression of a new political order.
