About the workIt's not a leap into the unknown – the athlete's body is perfectly positioned, every muscle seemingly tensed and prepared for the routine sequence of movements. These press photographs show three of the US medallists in the artistic and high diving events at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin. Through the dynamic nature of the snapshots, the viewer is encouraged to complete the flips in his or her own mind. The mass distribution of photographs of the sporting event by German press agencies was also an instrument used by the Nazi regime to promote its own policies abroad.
