On the River Main (Lautenschläger, Metz, Zille, Gaul), ca. 1900–1906
Gelatin silver print
Image dimensions9 x 11,7 cm
About the workEven as early as 1900, people were seeking relaxation far away from the capital city. Heinrich Zille photographed everyday scenes on the streets of Berlin, but also life in rural areas, such as men picking flowers and herbs on the banks of the River Main or on a boat. The landscape and the men’s uninhibited nudity both convey a relaxed atmosphere of leisure and enjoyment of nature. Zille’s photographic work was only discovered many years after his death. These images offer a fascinating insight into the leisure culture of the early twentieth century and people’s relationship with their own bodies.
