Portrait of Mrs. von Zimmermann, 1913
MediumOil on canvas
Dimensions without frame80 × 75 cm
About the workThis young woman looks relaxed and approachable in Leo Putz’s depiction – she must have felt at ease as his model. Nicknamed Tico, she is the sister of the painter’s sister-in-law. The picture is typical of Putz, who was known for his portraits of women. He was part of the Scholle artists’ group in Munich, which existed from 1899 to 1911. Their aspiration was “that everyone should cultivate their own Scholle [soil], which of course cannot be found on any map” – in other words, everyone should follow their own path. The work was acquired in the year it was created, which was also the year the Düsseldorf museum was founded.
