About the workPia Fries’ paintings thrive on colour, which she perceives as a material. In 2007, she transferred her approach to the flat medium of graphic art. The student of Gerhard Richter, who originally trained as a sculptor, was searching for tools and ways of working with liquid paint on a plate. The results were colour gradients and overlays, and she also printed beyond the edge of the plate. The white of the background holds the repeating elements in tension with one another.
