About the workAround 2000 years ago, Hermann the German, known as Arminius in Latin, had a surprising victory over the army of the Roman general Varus in the Teutoburg Forest. The event was celebrated in the nineteenth century as the founding moment of the German nation. The architect and sculptor Ernst von Bandel erected the huge Hermann Monument near Detmold, which was inaugurated by Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1875. That same year, Caspar Scheuren placed the monument at the centre of a title page, with portraits of Hermann, Wilhelm I and the sculptor decorating the frame.
