Farmhouses on a Mountainside, 1799
Sheet dimensions23 × 19,4 cm
About the workThe light on the sunny mountainside is so dazzlingly bright that it almost makes you want to close your eyes. The dark sky, painted with a brush, creates a dramatic interplay of light in contrast to the white paper. If you look more closely at the study, you can see how precisely the landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich used his pen to capture the farmhouses and the surrounding vegetation. The houses depicted here are likely from Tharandt, a small town in Saxon Switzerland that Friedrich visited during his excursions through the Dresden area.
