About the workNineteenth-century artists usually returned home from their travels with a large number of drawings and oil sketches, which served as the basis for future works. Oswald Achenbach might have painted this man during his trip to Italy in 1857; the motif is believed to come from the Sabine Hills to the north-east of Rome. The region was a popular destination for excursions and studies, especially for landscape painters like Oswald Achenbach, who sought out its idyllic and unspoilt scenery.
