As a traditional symbol of loyalty, the dog signifies the close relationship between the two subjects. In the early nineteenth century, the theme of friendship had almost religious overtones in the German-speaking world, as proven by the existence of many friendship paintings. In 1826, Hildebrandt and other art students followed the painter Wilhelm Schadow from Berlin to Düsseldorf, where he had become the director of the art academy. This very close circle also produced pictures dedicated to friendship.
