About the work
The signature on this sculpture identifies Erwin Eisch as its creator, but it is in fact a joint work by the artist and his wife, the wood sculptor and stained-glass artist Gretel Eisch. They met at the Munich Art Academy in the 1950s and collaborated closely from then on. For this portrait, Gretel Eisch produced the mould into which the glass was blown. The head belongs to a series of works in which Erwin Eisch explored how he was perceived by himself and others. He was an internationally respected role model for glass artists from 1962 onwards.
