About the workWhat at first glance looks like a mathematical problem is in fact a 1972 exhibition poster from the Kunsthalle Bern – a gift personally dedicated to Ingrid and Willi Kemp from the Japanese-American artist Shūsaku Arakawa. The print depicts one of around 100 panels from the artist’s “Mechanism of Meaning” cycle, which are laid out like the pages of a book. The concept originated from a collaboration with the writer Madeline Gins which began in the early 1960s. The subject of this extensive investigation was the nature of thought.
