About the workMary holds in her arms the body of her Son, Jesus Christ, taken from the cross. The mother’s feelings are expressed by her dramatically flowing garment. She supports her son from the side and thus allows the faithful to share in her grief. This type of Pietà has been a widespread devotional image in the Catholic Church since the fourteenth century. In 1507, the carver Hans Kels became a member of the guild known as the Kaufbeurer Kramerzunft, which organized local sculptors and painters.
