not on displayThis small stone figure depicts St Anthony, who, according to religious texts, was a Christian monk and lived in Egypt in the 3rd to 4th centuries. He is presented as a teacher with a book and a bell, the ringing of which was believed in the Middle Ages to have a protective effect against evil. The sculpture was probably made by the sculptor Johann Brabender, who had a flourishing workshop in Münster in the 16th century. He created numerous stone figures at Münster Cathedral, including a seated St Anthony, which bears a strong resemblance to this one.
