Rhinoceros, 2002
Bronze
(H x W x D)110 × 200 × 320 cm
About the workHas anyone ever stood so close to a rhinoceros? There is an imposing, life-size version of this animal in the Ehrenhof. The rough surface of the bronze sculpture represents its thick skin. Johannes Brus sculpts his works by applying clay to a large frame. During the modelling and subsequent casting, he deliberately leaves grooves, craters and even fingerprints unaltered, so that the artistic production process remains visible. Brus, who studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1964 to 1971, also practices painting and photography alongside sculpture.
