About the workThe Venetian artist Giovanni Battista Piazzetta was famous for his depictions of everyday scenes. One reason for his success was certainly the vividness of his pictures, which stemmed from the expressive faces of the figures. A selection of Piattetta’s drawings was published as a series of engravings in 1743, which were thereupon copied by the Italian engraver Niccolò Cavalli. These pieces were in the collection of the Düsseldorf Art Academy’s first director – Lambert Krahe – and served as illustrative material to study various faces and emotions.
