About the workIt is the plum blossom season. The days are still short; a veranda is illuminated by flickering candlelight. The restrained colours of the woman’s kimono are due to the Japanese government’s prohibitions on luxuries in the 1840s. The number of colours permitted for woodblock prints was also limited. In the lower right section of the print, the red “yoshikiri” stamp can be seen, which shows the coat of arms of the Tokugawa Imperial Family. The artist chose it to protect himself from disputes with the state authorities.
