Roundel with "Sorgheloos" (Carefree) and "Lichte Fortune" (Fickle Fortune), ca. 1520
Glass roundel, painted and silver-stained
Diameter21,5 cm
Place of originLeiden
About the workThis roundel was part of a small series that chronicles the tale of the anti-hero “Carefree”. He recklessly squanders and gambles away his money and eventually ends up in poverty. Unlike the model for this fable, the parable of the prodigal son from the Bible, there is no happy ending. The moralising story, which seems to have emerged in small amateur theatres in the Netherlands, was frequently presented in pictures. These roundels were a Dutch speciality. Thanks to their luminosity, they lent a certain vividness to their messages in many public or even wealthy private spaces.
