on display, room GAUL. Werke aus der Sammlung Kemp About the workFrom 1962 onwards, Winfred Gaul studied the impact of traffic signs. He was fascinated by the way their formal language attracts attention and influences people’s behaviour. In this piece, a vibrant red triangular shape takes on the function of a warning sign and draws the viewer’s gaze towards the centre of the picture. The painting thus arouses the expectation of a message – but since one fails to materialise, the design itself becomes the focus. Here, Gaul made visible the unconscious, often involuntary processes of everyday perception, transposing them into a distinct form of expression.
