About the workBorn Prince Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha lived in what is now Nepal around 500 BC. With his teachings he founded the world religion of Buddhism. This figure is from the Ayutthaya region in northern Thailand and depicts the spiritual leader seated in a meditative pose. His right hand is touching the earth, which symbolises that he is a proclaimer of truth. Typical features of sculptures from this area are the oval face, large earlobes and the tall flame motif on top of the skull’s bulge, the ushnisha, which is considered a sign of enlightenment.
