About the work1919 was a year of profound upheaval in Paul Klee’s life. He was discharged from military service and returned to Munich. Two years later, he started teaching at the Bauhaus. While he had previously used mostly pencil or watercolour on paper, oil paint now became his most important medium. He devoted himself to depictions of nature, often searching for an intersection between the natural and the human-made. In this image are several houseplants that look as if they have been carved into the dark background – the flower in the centre gives the work its title.
