Circuses I + IV, 1927
Linocut on Japanese paper
Sheet dimensions33 x 18 cm
About the workThe artist Gottfried Brockman used circus-related imagery as the setting for his depictions of human beings. Here, the artist has staged two acrobatic figures against a blank background. While studying fine and graphic arts at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, Brockmann produced numerous linocuts. The black-and-white contrast formed the basis for his experiments with surfaces, geometric shapes, and the balance between movement and stillness. Using the circle as a starting point, the human body is bent into open and closed positions.
