About the workA building site stretches out on the edge of a large city, ist buildings towering high into the sky. The white steam of a locomotive stands out against the red horizon. As a result of technological progress and industrialisation, Berlin rose rapidly at the beginning of the 20th century to become Germany’s economic metropolis. The Zwickau-born painter Max Pechstein, a founding member of the Brücke group of artists, captured the urban development in Berlin-Schmargendorf in this painting. After studying at the Academy of Art in Dresden, he moved to Berlin in 1908.
