About the workJoseph Beuys’ work often featured materials such as honey, felt and grease, whose significance for him was closely tied to their everyday usage. Two blocks of tallow – a substance once used to treat wounds and a rich source of energy – are placed in a display case next to ordinary objects. A case with a mirror includes the viewer in the work, which was realised for an exhibition in Leeds in 1983 and later installed in the art museum in Düsseldorf by Beuys. The artist was a professor at Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1960 to 1975 and caused a stir with his unusual teaching methods.
