The subject is a funeral ceremony with the artist as the central figure: wearing a tailcoat and top hat, he is surrounded by wailing people. This picture combines references and allusions to contemporary political events with the old German style of painting from the sixteenth century. Gert H. Wollheim only displayed the work in public after leaving Düsseldorf in 1924 because he had fallen out with the local art scene.
