About the workNails and the colour white play a central role in the work of Düsseldorf artist Günther Uecker. He understands white as the “culmination of light”, “triumph over darkness” and the basis of all life. For Uecker, the nail symbolises the juxtaposition of opposites in our lives: protection and defence, aggressiveness and fragility, good and evil; the nail penetrates into the space and renders time visible through its moving shadows. Uecker was a member of ZERO, a Düsseldorf artists’ group that strove for a new artistic beginning freed from the burden of history after the Second World War.
