About the workAngelika Kauffmann was one of the few successful women artists of the eighteenth century and was revered throughout Europe. Upon moving to Rome in 1782, she ran a salon where guests were entertained by performers such as Teresa Bandettini. After starting out as a dancer, Bandettini began improvising verse on stage. Kauffmann depicts her giving a performance, but the wreath of ivy also signals that she is a muse, a patron goddess of the arts. While an early version of the work was given to the artiste, Kauffmann likely painted this picture for herself.
