About the workIn the first half of the sixteenth century, miners in the Ore Mountains began to extract a cobalt pigment that soon became widespread throughout Europe as a blue dye. This may have been used to colour this glass bowl. Such bowls were especially popular in Northern Europe, but it is rarely clear from the archaeological finds whether they originally had handles or not. This example is related to a contemporary type of vessel known as a “Scheuer”; the body of this cup would have been drawn in to form a narrower, straight neck. This bowl was reportedly found in the region around Cologne.
