About the workRibs are a common decorative element in glassmaking. On this type of beaker, which was common in Central Europe around 1300, they appear particularly firm and rigid. They invite comparison with the outer buttresses of Gothic church buildings from this period. The cup is believed to have been found in Mainz. This fits in well with the city’s period of prosperity between 1244 and 1328, when it flourished after its liberation from archiepiscopal rule. It is not yet known, however, where such decolourised and therefore luxurious glasses were produced.
