About the workWhen Theodor Hagen painted this oil study, he was a student of the renowned landscape painter Oswald Achenbach at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Such small-format studies served as artistic exercises or models for later paintings and were not yet considered as full-fledged works of art. Inspired by French artists, they were increasingly created outdoors in nature. Hagen's preference for a more natural scenery is already evident in this early work. From 1871, he trained many open-air painters in Weimar as a professor of landscape painting.
