About the workThe gilding of the base and lid indicates that this vessel is valuable. The glass gives the impression of an unusual semi-precious stone and appears to be covered with a thick lacquer. This is in fact the uppermost, opaque layer of glass; the carp motif, based on a colour woodcut by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai, is carved into it. When European interest in Japanese art was kindled in the 1860s, it contributed to a new perception and appreciation of artistic craftwork.
