About the workCandida Höfer photographs places of encounter – like the waiting room of Düsseldorf’s Hauptbahnhof railway station presented here. The picture was taken while she was still studying under Bernd and Hilla Becher at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Unlike the artist’s later works, which are characterised by the absence of people, in this early photograph they are a central yet incidental element of the scene. Höfer always uses the lighting conditions she finds in situ, but her photographs go beyond mere documentation. Instead of simply depicting places, she creates new pictorial spaces.
