not on displayThe idea of Mary as the Queen of Heaven, characterised by her splendid crown, and as the mother of Jesus, the Son of God, was of central importance to the Christians in the Middle Ages. These two characterisations, glorified divine figure and worldly mother, are united in this Madonna. Because of their graceful and harmonious appearance, this type was called ‘Beautiful Madonnas. In the 14th to15th centuries, this artistic style developed in the courtly art metropolises of Central Europe, particularly in Prague and Salzburg. From there it was imported to the electorates of the Rhineland and southern Germany.
