About the workEmil Nolde is known for watercolours with bright colours and simple forms. A central motif in his oeuvre is the flat marshlands of North Frisia with their impressive cloud formations. He bought a farm south of the Danish border, which he had rebuilt according to his own plans between 1927 and 1937. Fascinated by the play of lights and the weather phenomena of his homeland, he created watercolours in which he also used the colour and structure of the paper as elements of his composition.
