About the workErich Heckel had been attracted to woodcuts since school days. The German artist was interested in the opportunity to experiment with this simple technique. Here, black wisps of clouds in the sky are enlivened by white spots and sharp white lines. ‘Fabrikvorstadt’ (Factory Suburb) was created in 1910, when Heckel primarily depicted people in the medium of the woodcut, while he pursued the subject of landscape in his paintings. The work, which was accomplished in two editions, is relatively rare.
