not on displayAround 1530, the Dutch painter Maarten van Heemskerk created a family portrait that was groundbreaking. Until then, it had been unusual to depict intimate moments of family life. At the same time, the painting references Christian motifs, such as the pouring of wine at the Last Supper or Mary with the infant Jesus. The signet ring identifies the depicted man as Pieter Jan Foppeszoon, a citizen of Haarlem who was a friend of the artist. This painting is, however, a copy. Conservation research has revealed that it must date from before 1750. Unfortunately, the circumstances of its production remain unknown.
