The building, which was considered impregnable in the Middle Ages, is located in the North Eifel. Hagen studied landscape painting in Düsseldorf and was appointed to the art academy in Weimar in 1871. From there, the artist, who was inspired by the modern French open-air painting of the era, exerted his influence on the revival of German painting.
