About the workThis portrayal of Venus and Adonis is the first of at least four versions of the theme painted by Peter Paul Rubens. The Roman goddess is trying in vain to prevent her lover from going hunting, where he will die. The painting entered Johann Wilhelm’s collection in 1679 and was initially hung in the gallery in Düsseldorf’s city palace and then in Bensberg Castle. It is unknown why this work was not brought to Munich after the ruler’s death, as was the case for the rest of the collection, but it represents the origins of the Düsseldorf art collection more than almost any other work.
