About the workJohann Wilhelm Schirmer’s art focuses on every angle of nature. Starting in Düsseldorf, he exerted great influence on the development of western landscape painting. He explored many European countries with like-minded artists. This painting was realised in the Neandertal valley on the Düssel. The work became part of the collection of the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where Schirmer encouraged his students to copy his studies. He called this type of study a “parthie”: a detailed – but not too small – section of an image that could serve as a basis for larger pictures.
