About the workIda Gerhardi was a particularly independent and well-connected artist for her time. She lived in Paris from 1891 to 1913 and became an important intermediary in Franco-German cultural exchange. She was particularly successful with her portraits. In this painting, she immortalised one of the 33 sons of King Chulalongkorn of Siam. By positioning his head in front of an abstracted ship, Gerhardi demonstrated courage in an unusual composition. In 1913, the association Verband der Kunstfreunde in den Ländern am Rhein awarded the work first prize and donated it to the museum in Düsseldorf.
