About the workThe Schenkenschanz fortress in the centre of the image marks the point where the Rhine and Waal rivers met at that time. The Dutch painter Anthonie van Borssom made a name for himself with his depictions of landscapes. He is assumed to have been a pupil of Rembrandt, but there is no clear evidence for this. Shortly before this picture was completed, the artist had undertaken a long journey along the Rhine. Van Borssom painted one of his typical landscapes with a herd of cattle. The low horizon gives the impression of an endless expanse of space.
