About the workThe Dutch artist Jan Frans Douven was the most important painter in the court of the Düsseldorf Elector Johann Wilhelm. This equestrian portrait, which hung in the audience chamber of Düsseldorf’s city palace, clearly demonstrated the ruler’s power to visitors. In addition to his work as a painter, Douven was commissioned by Johann Wilhelm to travel across Europe in order to acquire artworks for the elector’s collection. Built to house this collection between 1709 and 1714, the Picture Gallery in the city palace was one of the first museum buildings in Europe.
