About the workSwiss painter Arnold Böcklin, who was trained in Düsseldorf, was interested in the hidden and the enigmatic. In this oil sketch, the castle that gives the work its title is concealed by trees, with only the arcade visible. The gloomy, overgrown nature corresponds to the dramatic scene on the shore, which is difficult to make out: the criminals with the kidnapped woman and the dead man dressed in black barely stand out from their surroundings. Böcklin varied this composition over the years in other paintings and explored different moods by shifting the emphasis.
