About the workWilhelm von Kobell’s late work included numerous encounters in front of landscapes around Munich, where he was appointed court painter by Elector Palatine Karl Theodor, who built Benrath Palace near Düsseldorf. In this painting Kobell portrays a mounted hunter and two goatherds seen in profile. The landscape almost disappears behind the figures, while the sky, path and shadows determine the composition of the image. The severity and clarity of the composition are characteristic of the artist.
