About the workDuring his first trip to Rome, Oswald Achenbach, who later built a career in Düsseldorf with his Italian motifs, painted the cypresses in the gardens of the Villa d’Este. Capturing this group of trees was considered a must for artists visiting Tivoli at the time. Despite the fact that the subject always remains the same, the studies reveal certain interests and inclinations. By tightly framing the image, Achenbach makes the cypresses seem impenetrable and vast. As in many of his other works, nature is portrayed in an almost dramatic way here, too.
