Similar to this view of the Harz Mountains by Carl Friedrich Lessing is a surviving work from the same year by the American painter Worthington Whittredge, who was temporarily based in Düsseldorf. Both artists were presumably at this viewpoint together. What is rather unusual for Lessing is that he dispensed with figures and focused entirely on the landscape.
