About the workThe Düsseldorf landscape painter Oswald Achenbach developed his own recognisable style. Among other things, he depicted dramatic weather and lighting conditions, as in this work. A frequent motif was a smoking Mount Vesuvius, which had been active since an eruption in 1872. This painting also features a monument that no longer exists; it was erected after the volcano erupted in the eighteenth century. Various figures populate the scene, including a member of a Catholic penitential brotherhood with his characteristic white hood.
